SUMMARY:Hydrogen-Powered Engines: The Road to Advanced Engine Oils
DESCRIPTION:One solution for achieving carbon neutrality is the use of hydrogen gas. There has been a long-standing movement to build a hydrogen society\, focusing on the utilization of hydrogen gas. The electrification trend has become firmly established in the realm of passenger cars\, yet both battery electric and fuel cell technologies present notable limitations when it comes to applications in heavy-duty vehicles. The growth of the hydrogen (H2) society\, coupled with the industry’s recognition of hydrogen internal combustion engines (H2ICE) as a zero-emission technology\, serves as crucial facilitators for original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) in their pursuit of this solution to meet stringent CO2 reduction targets mandated by legislation. This represents a significant advantage for OEMs as it allows them to continue leveraging their expertise and production facilities in mature internal combustion engine (ICE) technologies.  \nH2ICE engines are currently undergoing extensive development\, and although some characteristics have already emerged\, there are still ongoing advancements. Unlike their diesel counterparts\, H2ICE engines do not emit soot\, but they may experience challenges such as problematic pre-ignition and water accumulation under specific operating conditions.  \nGiven that the precise lubricant chemistry requirements have yet to be established\, Lubrizol has devised a strategy to capitalize on our extensive knowledge of formulation from various domains. This involves actively collaborating with OEMs\, oil companies\, and independent laboratories. By establishing strong partnerships early in the development process\, Lubrizol has comprehensive technical insights to develop lubricants optimized for H2ICE in line with its future technology strategy. \nWebinar Details: \n📅 Date: June 4\, 2025 \n⏰ Time: 2:00 PM – 3:00 PM SGT \n💬 Topic: Hydrogen-Powered Engines: The Road to Advanced Engine Oils \n🎤 Speaker:  Kazuyoshi Miyoshi\, Technology Manager\, Lubrizol Japan Limited \nRegistration closes on May 30\, 2025  at 6:00 PM SGT. SUMMARY:ALIA Webinar: Base Oil Supply and Demand
DESCRIPTION:Don’t miss the ALIA Webinar on Base Oil Supply and Demand\, happening on February 6\, 2025\, from 2:00 PM to 3:00 PM SGT. This insightful session will feature Milind Phadke\, a seasoned expert and Vice President\, Energy at KLINE & Company\, alongside moderator Paul Nai\, Regional Business Director of Lubrizol South East Asia (Pte) Ltd.\, and Chair of the ALIA Technology Subcommittee. \nAbstract \nNew Business Opportunities for Basestock Marketers \nLubricant basestocks are the primary precursor for blending finished lubricants. At the same time\, basestocks do not have any volumetrically significant applications excluding finished lubricants. As a result\, trends that impact the finished lubricants market impact the basestocks market though with some time lag and other distortions. \nThe dominant trends impacting the finished lubricants\, have one underlying driver: decarbonization. Electrification will drive a decline in PCMO consumption and to a much lower extent and in the mid-to long term HDMO consumption. This will have the most impact on Group III/III+ and Group II. In addition\, growing considerations around product carbon footprint (PCF) and circularity create new challenges and opportunities for basestocks marketers. \nThe supply base for basestocks is not static. If all the announced capacity additions see the light of day\, both Group II/II+ and Group III/III+ will see global capacity increase by around 15% each by 2043 – most of which will happen in the next 5 years. This will have to be compensated by an equivalent reduction in Group I to balance the market. In reality\, the reduction in Group I supply could be higher depending on the actual electrification pathway and the actual surplus in the global market. \nHow do basestocks marketers navigate this market dynamic? Depending on each marketer’s unique business environment\, three “fronts” emerge: \n1. SUMMARY:ALIA Webinar: Examining Hydrogen’s Role in Asia’s Energy Future
DESCRIPTION:Asia’s influence in the global economy has steadily grown over time. The region has evolved into an industrial powerhouse\, excelling in manufacturing\, technology\, innovation\, and logistics. However\, this industrial growth has come with a heavy reliance on fossil fuels—primarily coal\, oil\, and natural gas—which has made Asia a major contributor to global carbon emissions. \nTo achieve its decarbonization targets\, Asia is placing high hopes on Hydrogen\, with several countries in the region having already implemented national hydrogen strategies. The potential for Clean Hydrogen in Asia is vast\, and it is beginning to make inroads across various sectors. From power generation and transportation to hard-to-abate industries like shipping and aviation\, hydrogen projects are emerging across the region. \nAsia’s hydrogen market is unique\, where we see countries leading in production and consumption such as China and India alongside nations like Japan and South Korea\, which aim to become leading importers. Meanwhile\, Australia is positioning itself as the world’s largest hydrogen exporter. \nWhile Asia consumes around 50% of global fossil-based hydrogen\, the business case for clean hydrogen is still in the early stages of development. A major hurdle is the high cost of producing green hydrogen\, which is currently 3 to 6 times more expensive than grey hydrogen. The demand supply balance and regulatory landscape is still uncertain\, with only a few projects advancing to the final investment decision stage. \nHowever\, Asia is uniquely positioned to overcome these obstacles. The region’s significant demand potential\, coupled with abundant renewable energy resources in countries like Australia\, India\, and China\, can help drive down the cost of green hydrogen production. Additionally\, China’s competitive edge in electrolyser production further strengthens the region’s ability to scale up clean hydrogen effort. \nIn this webinar\, we will examine: \n\nAsia’s energy transition and hydrogen’s role in the region\nWhat’s driving hydrogen adoption across Asia?\nHydrogen opportunities across the region\nKey challenges hindering hydrogen’s scalability\nWhat Asia needs to do to fully harness hydrogen’s potential?\n\nAbout the Speaker: \nMs. Ruella Menezes is a Director at Kline + Company’s Energy practice and brings with her more than 14 years of experience in strategy and consulting. With a primary focus on sustainability\, her expertise lies in supporting clients to develop robust\, scalable low-carbon business portfolios. Prior to Kline\, Ruella spent nearly a decade at Accenture\, where she supported clients in the Energy and Chemicals sector with a range of sustainability-focused strategy and consulting projects. \n\nRegistration closes on November 29\, 2024 (Friday) at 6:00 PM SGT. Free for ALIA members. For non-members\, tickets are US$50 per person. \nTo register\, click here: (https://buytickets.at/asianlubricantmanufacturersunion/1446536)

SUMMARY:ALIA Webinar: Clearing the GHG Reporting Cobwebs
DESCRIPTION:As sustainability continues to take center stage\, the myriad of GHG (Greenhouse Gas) reporting requirements has caused confusion for many organizations\, particularly in understanding the differences between various standards and their purposes. From GRI\, IFRS/ISSB\, CDP\, to TCFD and PACT\, companies in our region must navigate these acronyms and their specific reporting criteria. \nIn the oil & gas industry\, especially in upstream operations\, there is increased emphasis (and in some regions\, mandates) on methane emissions reporting under OGMP 2.0. OGMP 2.0 stands for the Oil and Gas Methane Partnership 2.0\, a comprehensive reporting framework designed to help oil and gas companies accurately measure and report their methane emissions. Launched by the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) in 2020 as an enhancement of the original OGMP framework\, OGMP 2.0 aims to address the growing concerns over methane’s role in climate change\, as methane is a potent greenhouse gas. \nGiven that the lubricants industry operates downstream in the oil & gas value chain\, understanding these implications is crucial. \nMore importantly\, GHG emissions reporting is no longer just a concern for publicly listed companies. Upcoming regulations\, such as those in Singapore targeting even non-publicly listed entities\, along with the anticipated expansion of carbon taxes across the region\, necessitate a deeper understanding of reporting requirements. \nAdding to the complexity is the growing trend of companies quantifying their product carbon footprint in addition to corporate-level carbon footprint reporting. For those tackling both\, what are the implications in terms of methodology\, data boundaries\, and reporting standards? \nThis webinar will demystify these reporting challenges. A practical example will be shared\, comparing Corporate Carbon Footprint Models with Product Carbon Footprint Models for a typical lubricant blending company. \nAbout the Speaker: \nMr. CK Chung\, founder of Smart Tradzt\, is an expert in carbon footprint\, decarbonization\, and supply chain management with 25 years of consulting experience. His background includes senior management roles at Accenture and Deloitte Consulting. He has worked with industry giants like Shell Eastern Petroleum. \nCK’s innovative solutions have earned him numerous accolades\, including the Best Customer ROI Award from SAP\, the Best Business Case Study from Singapore Business Review for a transformation project with PETRONAS\, and recognition from UOB’s Sustainability Greentech Competition for his contributions to product carbon footprint and green procurement innovations. \nModerator: \nKeith Schulz\, Chief Sustainability Officer\, Motul Asia Pacific \nRegistration closes on November 11\, 2024 (Monday) at 5:00 PM SGT. Free for ALIA members. For non-members\, tickets are US$50 per person. \nTo register\, click here:https: (https://buytickets.at/asianlubricantmanufacturersunion/1420558)
