One solution for achieving carbon neutrality is the use of hydrogen gas. There has been a long-standing movement to build a hydrogen society, focusing on the utilization of hydrogen gas. The electrification trend has become firmly established in the realm of passenger cars, yet both battery electric and fuel cell technologies present notable limitations when it comes to applications in heavy-duty vehicles. The growth of the hydrogen (H2) society, coupled with the industry’s recognition of hydrogen internal combustion engines (H2ICE) as a zero-emission technology, serves as crucial facilitators for original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) in their pursuit of this solution to meet stringent CO2 reduction targets mandated by legislation. This represents a significant advantage for OEMs as it allows them to continue leveraging their expertise and production facilities in mature internal combustion engine (ICE) technologies.
H2ICE engines are currently undergoing extensive development, and although some characteristics have already emerged, there are still ongoing advancements. Unlike their diesel counterparts, H2ICE engines do not emit soot, but they may experience challenges such as problematic pre-ignition and water accumulation under specific operating conditions.
Given that the precise lubricant chemistry requirements have yet to be established, Lubrizol has devised a strategy to capitalize on our extensive knowledge of formulation from various domains. This involves actively collaborating with OEMs, oil companies, and independent laboratories. By establishing strong partnerships early in the development process, Lubrizol has comprehensive technical insights to develop lubricants optimized for H2ICE in line with its future technology strategy.
